Profit from UNT's affordability
Tuition and fees
Cost doesn't have to be a barrier to earning a graduate degree. Thanks to state assistance and careful management, UNT keeps costs reasonable for students.
The 2007-08 tuition cost estimate for 9 graduate semester credit hours for two semesters is $4,777 for Texas residents and $9,781 for nonresidents (plus additional instruction fees). For more information, visit essc.unt.edu/saucs/tuition.htm.
Departmental Fellowships and Assistantships
UNT's academic departments offer graduate students more than 800 teaching fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships and graduate assistantships each year. Students holding these positions for 20 or more hours per week receive health insurance. To apply, contact your academic department or visit www.gradschool.unt.edu/ all_about_money.htm.
Financial Aid
Fifty-eight percent of graduate students at UNT receive financial aid. They are eligible for traditional financial aid such as grants, work-study jobs and loans. UNT awards $190 million in aid to undergraduate and graduate students each year. For more information, visit www.unt.edu/finaid.
Scholarships and Other Financial Assistance
Graduate School Fellowships and Tuition Scholarships.
Academic programs nominate students for Graduate School Fellowships and Tuition Scholarships. Nominees selected for a master's fellowship receive $10,000 for the first year of study. Nominees selected for a doctoral fellowship receive $20,000 for the first year and departments provide support for a second and third year of study. Nominees selected for a Tuition Scholarship receive $5,000 for full-time enrollment of 24 semester hours their first year of full-time study. These awards qualify a student for in-state tuition rates.
Toulouse Doctoral Fellow Tuition Scholarship.
Recipients of $20,000 doctoral fellowships receive up to $3,000 in tuition costs for their first year of full-time study. In years two and three, the award covers most of the tuition and fees for 9 hours in the long semesters and 6 hours in the summer.
Graduate Research Assistant Tuition Scholarship.
Recipients of a College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Research Fellowship or certain research assistantships in the College of Engineering receive this award for up to three years of tuition and fee support for 9 hours of study in the long semesters and 6 hours in the summer.
Graduate Tuition Surcharge Grant.
Every graduate student who is enrolled full-time and employed at least 10 hours as a teaching fellow, teaching assistant, research assistant or graduate assistant receives this grant, which defrays the tuition cost (above undergraduate tuition) charged for enrollment in graduate courses. By itself, this grant does not qualify a student for in-state tuition rates. Students must remain in good academic standing and make satisfactory progress toward their degree to sustain this award.
$1,000 Doctoral Academic Achievement Scholarship.
Many new doctoral degree program students receive this award for their first year of study. It qualifies a student for in-state tuition rates and is renewable for a second year if the student makes satisfactory progress in his/her program during the first year.
McNair Scholar Fellowship.
Graduates who have participated in previous McNair Scholar programs are eligible to apply for McNair Scholar Fellowships. Recipients may receive up to four continuous semesters of support for full-time enrollment if they remain in good academic standing and make satisfactory progress in the degree program to which they were admitted.
