HIPPY is a 3-year (90 week) parent involvement and school readiness program in which learning and play go hand in hand. Using a structured curriculum, parents encourage their children to recognize shapes and colors, tell stories, follow directions, solve logical problems and acquire other school readiness skills.
HIPPY helps parents empower themselves as their children’s first teacher by giving them the tools, skills and confidence they need to work with their children in the home. The program was designed to bring families, organizations and communities together and remove any barriers to participation that may include limited financial resources or lack of education.
HIPPY is an international program that started in Israel in 1969 as a research and demonstration project. It has since spread to other countries. HIPPY came to the US in 1984, and to Dallas, Texas in 1997. The National Council of Jewish Women was instrumental in developing both the national office as well as HIPPY in Texas. The Texas HIPPY Center was founded in 1997-1998.
