National
Student Exchange
Outgoing Students
The University of North Texas is a member of the National Student Exchange (NSE), a consortium of more than 190 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada that provides opportunities for students to study at participating member institutions while remaining enrolled at their home university. An exchange through NSE can enrich your college experience and provide many opportunities for personal growth.

Why participate in an NSE exchange?
As you might guess, there are about as many reasons for exchanging as there are students who apply! You should consider going on an NSE exchange to...
- Study a discipline not offered at UNT
- Study with a particular professor in your discipline
- Take courses not available at UNT
- Experience learning at an institution you are considering for graduate school
- Learn about the culture in another part of the United States or Canada
- Travel.

What are the eligibility requirements?
You are eligible to apply for an exchange if you:
- Have a GPA of at least 2.5;
- Earned at least 12 semester hours at UNT the long semester immediately before applying for an exchange.
- Will have completed at least two consecutive long semesters at UNT just prior to going on exchange.
NOTE: In determining eligibility for an exchange, summer enrollment is not considered a long semester. A student must have completed at least 24 credits at UNT in the two semesters before exchanging to be eligible. A student whose GPA drops below 2.5 before the exchange takes place will not be permitted to go on exchange.

Where can I go?
Participating institutions vary greatly as to location, size, and programs. Forty-eight states--plus Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands--have member universities. There are locales with warm weather (University of Hawaii at Hilo and at Manoa) and locales with cold weather (University of Alaska at Anchorage and Fairbanks). Some universities are in large urban areas (Hunter College at the City University of New York and California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, for example) while others are in rural areas or small towns (Western State College, Bowling Green State University, and Southern Oregon State College). Several historically Black colleges, including Alabama State University, Southern University, and South Carolina State University) participate in NSE. In addition, several universities in Canada have recently joined NSE as Canadian Partners.
UNT does not exchage to other schools in Texas.
Your campus NSE Coordinator can provide you with a copy of the current NSE Directory, which provides detailed information about all the NSE member institutions. To obtain a copy, just stop by the NSE Office, which is located in the
Chilton Hall 211 (inside the Honors College). You will find a variety of institutions, which means that there is something to appeal to almost everyone.

How does NSE work?
In addition to information in the NSE Directory and at the NSE web site, the information below provides details of how the program works.
- Paying tuition and fees: There are two plans under which a student may participate in NSE: Plan A, under which the student pays in-state tuition and fees directly to the host school, the one to which she/he is going on exchange; and Plan B, under which the student pays tuition and fees to the home institution (in your case, UNT). Room and meals are always paid at the host campus, whether you are exchanging on Plan A or Plan B. The NSE Directory that you can get from your NSE coordinator explains each plan more fully and provides information on costs at participating institutions.
- It is possible for you and another person to be paired for placement. Perhaps you and your roommate would like to go on exchange together or a brother or sister would like to go on exchange with you. In those cases, we can make sure that you both get the same host school.
- After your actual placement is finalized in early March, you will be required to attend a meeting with the NSE Coordinator to work out details. Among the tasks to be completed before you leave are the following: registration for classes at your host school; making sure that your financial aid application is in good order if needed; completion of an advising agreement so that all the courses you take while on exchange will count toward completion of your requirements; and applying for housing at the host campus. Failure to complete these obligations will ordinarily result in the cancellation of the placement.
- Remember that while you are on exchange you will be required to take a full-time course load. You will also be expected to abide by the rules of the campus on which you are a visiting student.
