UNT is committed to producing life-long learners and critical thinkers. The Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships has helped UNT students win more than $1 million in prestigious national scholarships, such as the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and those of the National Science Foundation and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. In 2007, UNT was one of seven universities in the nation with four Goldwater Scholars in math and science.

Many UNT alumni are found in top positions in the region and all across the country. Alumni include self-help guru Dr. Phil McGraw; Larry McMurtry, author of many novels including The Last Picture Show and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove; five journalism alumni with eight Pulitzers among them; recording artists Pat Boone, Don Henley, Roy Orbison, Sara Hickman, Lyle Mays, "Blue" Lou Marini, and eight-time Grammy winner Norah Jones; former Miss America and entrepreneur Phyllis George; and Horatio Alger Award winner Ronald Waranch, a California developer.

The power of a UNT education doesn't just belong to the famous. Alumna Constance Norris Lacy, manager of the Eddie Bernice Johnson Youth & Family Center in Dallas, supervises licensed clinicians who provide family and individual counseling to students at 15 schools in the Dallas Independent School District.

Alumnus Aaron Bonds, a coach in the Agua Dulce Independent School District in South Texas, works with students in the sixth through 12th grades as a coordinator for the district's Project Real-Time after-school tutoring and life skills program. He also created A&B College Exposure Program, which helps high school student-athletes obtain athletic scholarships.
