PREPRESS PROOF CHECKLIST

The prepress proof shows what the final image will look like. This is an important stage, especially in four-color printing, and it offers you a final opportunity to catch errors before going to press. Bluelines, color keys and laminated four-color proofs are a few types of prepress proofs. Making changes at this stage will create additional expenses.

When checking a final proof, look for the following:

  • Ensure that page numbers are correct throughout.
  • Make sure pages are positioned correctly back to back.
  • Check borders and rules for alignment and crossovers.
  • Re-examine headlines and display type for typos and placement.
  • Look carefully at each page to make sure nothing was masked out or trimmed off.
  • Make sure every photo is positioned and cropped correctly.
  • Clearly circle with red ink every blemish, flaw or broken letter or anything else that seems wrong.
  • Check that all corrections from previous proofs were made.
  • When proofing multi-color jobs, know what text and images should print in each color.
  • Make sure the job is trimmed to the correct size and properly folded.
