University and System Seals

The university seal is reserved for the highest official communication of the university. The seal is a mark of guarantee; it is reserved for the most solemn and serious purposes of the institution. Use of the UNT seal and the UNT System seal is regulated by the university creative director, who must give permission for their use.

Seals are reserved for the following items:

  • University transcripts
  • Diplomas and certificates evidencing completion of degree requirements and/or courses of study. (Blank certificates containing the seal may be created by one of the service departments included in this guide but will be produced in limited quantity and only for a specific purpose. Offices using such certificates are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the seal and should exercise appropriate care in ensuring that the certificates are used only for their intended purpose.)
  • Ceremonial documents such as awards and proclamations from the president’s and chancellor’s offices
  • Commemorative objects created for limited distribution, made out of durable material of high quality, and for a specific purpose. The only exempt items not made of durable material are graduation announcements.
  • Jewelry made out of durable material.
  • Signage in extremely limited usage, such as at the main entryway to the institution, but not including building signs; in the chancellor’s, president’s and system offices, but not in less formal settings
  • Financial documents such as the official university or system budgets, checks, university- or system-issued securities and other financial papers, where it is essentially a mark of guarantee (It may not be used in ordinary internal communication documents regarding financial matters.)
  • All contracts and documents that require the signature of the president or chancellor
  • Documents written by UNT System lawyers
  • Letterhead and envelopes used by the chancellor, president, Board of Regents and system administrators who represent UNT, the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth and the UNT Dallas Campus. The seals are not used on business cards.

Any exemptions to this rule require the permission of the university creative director, (940) 565-2108.

The seal is not to be used in place of the university wordmark or lettermark. The seal may not be used on any disposable item or in online or fluid media (video, Power Point presentations, CD-ROM presentations). Examples of inappropriate uses of the seal include but are not limited to casual clothing, coffee cups, toilet paper, napkins, water bottles, plastic mugs and disposable cups. Other marks, such as the university’s spirit markers, have been designated as noted in the following sections for these purposes.

Basic guidelines when using the seal

  1. Use only reproduction-quality images of the official seal provided by UNT Printing Services.
  2. Use the seal in its entirety.
  3. Use the seal alone. It should never be combined with another emblem or symbol, except where it appears with the wordmark of the university or the UNT System. The seal may be combined with type, but type should not touch or be superimposed on it. The only exception to this rule is on transcripts, on which overprinting is used to prevent fraudulent reproduction.
  4. Use the seal only in the original configuration, in a single color of UNT green or black. It may be wholly reversed out of any solid color or blind embossed. Exception: The seal may be embossed in gold, silver and green on official university graduation announcements.
