Gus SeligmannBringing the university and community together

Some of Denton's 3- and 4-year-olds were a bridge that helped connect Gus and Karin Seligmann with the UNT President's Council.

The Seligmanns are longtime supporters of Denton Christian Preschool, a United Way agency. Their interest in the preschool recently prompted them to become members of the President's Council, which raises money for university scholarships.

"The fact that council dues could be used to support UNT graduate students working with Denton Christian Preschool was crucial," says Gus Seligmann, associate professor of history.

Karin Seligmann, a Denton real estate agent, also taught English for 21 years. The two have 63 years of combined teaching experience. They promote education and enjoy contributing to scholarships. They also enjoy attending council functions.

"When meeting other council members for the first time," Gus Seligmann says, "I was amazed at how many people I already knew."

However, he continues, "I would like to see more faculty members join President's Council. This is a way to raise the level of conversation between the university and the community."
