April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The UNT Women’s Center is sponsoring a series of events in April to raise awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Mary Pastorius, director of the UNT Women’s Center and Volunteer Center, says Sexual Assault Awareness Month’s purpose is to dispel rape myths, examine sex role stereotypes, provide suggestions for protection against sexual assault, and help victims get in touch with resources that can help them.

“The Women’s Center is dedicated to educating the university and Denton community about rape, sexual abuse and other forms of nonconsensual sexual activity,” Pastorius says. “The center conducts presentations and workshops on a variety of topics related to rape and sexual assault.”

The center is also sponsoring a Changing Lives Campaign, to collect spare change to benefit the Denton County Friends of the Family, a crisis intervention and recovery agency and family shelter. To compete in the fund-raising campaign, student organizations and departments can register at the Women’s Center, University Union, Room 430, and pick up jars to collect change through April 20. The department or student organization with the most change will be recognized at the Take Back the Night Rally, April 22.
