D. JACK DAVIS, professor and former dean of the School of Visual Arts and director of the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, received the National Art Educator of the Year Award at the 45th annual conference of the National Art Education Association, March 6 in Boston.


GLEN HAUBOLD,
manager of utilities maintenance, serves on the membership committee of the Central Association of Physical Plant Administrators and as a member attended the association's technology conference, Feb. 27-March 1 in San Antonio.

D. SHANE KOCH, assistant professor of rehabilitation, social work and addictions, was appointed editor of the Journal of Teaching in the Addictions in January. As editor, he will also serve on the board of directors of the International Coalition of Addiction Science Educators.

GARRY L. LANDRETH, Regents Professor of counseling, development and higher education, was named Director Emeritus by the board of directors of the Association for Play Therapy at its annual international conference, Oct. 5-9 in Denver.

RICHARD McCORMICK, supervisor of Research Park facilities, completed "Supervisor's Toolkit" training at the Central Association of Physical Plant Administrators technology conference, Feb. 24-28 in San Antonio. The weeklong training for facilities supervisors covers leadership, communication, motivation and customer service, among other topics.

SAM SAULS, associate professor of radio, television and film, presented "Developing an Administrator's Guide to Electronic Media on Campus: Starting, Expanding and Improving a College Radio, Television, Cable or Webcasting Station" at the Texas Association of Broadcast Educators conference, Feb. 25 in San Antonio.

SCOTIE SELMAN, safety compliance and training officer in facilities, co-taught the "Supervisor's Toolkit" at the Central Association of Physical Plant Administrators technology conference, Feb. 24-28 in San Antonio.

UNT System Chancellor LEE JACKSON appeared in a FOX-4 News story March 3 and 4, discussing an agreement between LULAC and UNT regarding political demonstrations on a diverse campus. Jackson and President NORVAL POHL describe the UNT task force created to examine the university's outreach to Hispanics in the March 4 Denton Record-Chronicle.

MORRIS MARTIN, head music librarian, and SUSANNAH CLEVELAND, music reference librarian, comment on UNT's Bert Hile Collection, made up primarily of disco records, in the March 13 Dallas Morning News.

BERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, comments on the relationship between D/FW Airport's corporate community and American Airlines in the Feb. 27 Dallas Morning News. His related study on the economic impact of Delta's decision to close its D/FW hub is noted in a Feb. 27 Fort Worth Star-Telegram article.

JON YOUNG, professor and chair of the Department of Technology and Cognition, talks about the multitasking abilities of children in the March 10 Dallas Morning News.

JAMES KENDRA, assistant professor of public administration, explains post-tsunami problems in Indian Ocean fishing communities in the March 14 Denton Record-Chronicle.

RICHARD RAFES, senior vice president for administration, comments on the new fountain and other planned renovations to the Library Mall area in the March 7 Denton Record-Chronicle.

NANCY WESTPHAL BERRY, 69, Professor Emeritus of visual arts who worked at UNT from 1991 to 2002, died Feb. 26.

Berry earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1957 and two master's degrees from Southern Methodist University in 1976 and 1982. At UNT, she was instrumental in developing the museum education certification program and received funding from the Getty Trust to establish a Center for Art Museum/School Collaborations. She also worked closely with the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts and was faculty coordinator for the Marcus Fellows program in art education. In 2004 a scholarship was established at UNT in her name.

Before coming to Denton she was director of public programs at the Dallas Museum of Art, national director of the museum education division of the National Art Education Association and interim director of the Meadows Museum at SMU. She also taught art at Midland's Trinity School and at SMU and was a consultant for several years.

She won numerous awards, including being named an NAEA distinguished fellow in 2000.

A service was held March 4 in Dallas. Memorials may be made to the UNT-Nancy Berry Scholarship in Art Education, UNT Office of Development, P.O. Box 311250, Denton, Texas 76203-1250.
