Inspirational speaker "Rudy" Ruettiger to visit UNT

Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger — a motivational speaker who beat the odds to fulfill his dream of attending the University of Notre Dame and playing football for the Fighting Irish — will bring his message of hard work and determination to UNT. Ruettiger's achievement was the inspiration of the 1993 film, "Rudy," staring Sean Astin. "Dream Night with Rudy Ruettiger," begins at 7 p.m. April 12 with a pep rally in the University Union Silver Eagle Suite. Ruettiger will speak beginning at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. His presentation will focus on his life experiences and what it takes to make your dreams come true. The event is free and open to the public. In addition, "Rudy" will be shown at 4 p.m. in the Union Lyceum on April 12. Admission is free. Regents raise board-designated tuition $6 per semester credit hour

In a special meeting March 23, the UNT System Board of Regents raised board-designated tuition for the 2005-06 academic year $6 per semester credit hour (from $75 to $81 per semester credit hour) and authorized a $4.60 per semester increase in mandatory fees.

Tenure granted in one appealed case

Acting on a recommendation from President Norval Pohl, the regents granted Jacqueline Lambiase promotion to the rank of associate professor of journalism with tenure during the board's meeting March 23. The promotion and awarding of tenure will take effect Sept. 1, for the 2005-06 academic year.

Hopping down the bunny trail — Shane Koch, assistant professor of rehabilitation, social work and addictions, walks with his children, Michael and Tabitha, to participate in the Kappa Kappa Gamma Easter Egg Hunt March 22 on campus. Defense bill funding of $3.1 million buys UNT two electron microscopes

Scientists and students in the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) at UNT now have the opportunity to think big by starting extremely small —  looking at molecules and atoms.

Big day for nanotechnology — U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, who helped ensure that UNT benefited from defense bill appropriation funds, was on hand March 22 for the unveiling of two microscopes for the university purchased with the funds. U.S. Rep. Myra Crownover (left) and President Norval Pohl (right) also attended the event.

International Week at UNT starts April 4

This year's International Week, which begins April 4, includes two new events — festivals from Japan and Pakistan. Approximately 120 countries will be represented during this year's events, including the Ivory Coast and Iceland for the first time.

Project aims to preserve web information for posterity

The average lifespan of a web page is approximately 44 days, according to the American Library Association.

So what happens to important digital information that is not available in any other form when sites expire? Cathy Hartman, head of the digital projects department in the UNT Libraries, and Samantha Hastings, interim dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences, received a $433,000 grant from the U.S. Library of Congress to come up with an answer.

UNT to host annual Texas Higher Education Law Conference April 11-12

Nearly 400 representatives from more than 80 Texas colleges and universities will be on campus for the ninth annual Texas Higher Education Law Conference April 11-12 at the Gateway Center. The conference offers 24 workshops covering education law topics ranging from the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act to possible guidelines and changes for free speech zones on college campuses.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The UNT Women's Center is sponsoring a series of events in April to raise awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Mary Pastorius, director of the UNT Women's Center and Volunteer Center, says Sexual Assault Awareness Month's purpose is to dispel rape myths, examine sex role stereotypes, provide suggestions for protection against sexual assault, and help victims get in touch with resources that can help them.

Staff Council hears update on campus master plan, proposed child care center

Staff Council election deadline

Return original ballots to Marquis Hall, Room 311, by 4:30 p.m. April 4.

The UNT Staff Council heard a report from Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, regarding the university's master plan for the campus during the group's March 7 meeting.

Work continues on UNT's Academic Plan

A 16-member steering committee has been working this spring with Howard Johnson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, and his office to write and revise UNT's Academic Plan. Johnson says the plan will serve as a roadmap to guide the university's academic future and clearly define its institutional identity.

Senate approves tenure appeals process resolution

The UNT Faculty Senate approved a resolution during its March 9 meeting recommending that individuals whose 2004 tenure appeals are still pending be granted an additional terminal year if their cases "remain with a negative decision regarding tenure."
