International Week at UNT starts April 4

This year's International Week, which begins April 4, includes two new events — festivals from Japan and Pakistan. Approximately 120 countries will be represented during this year's events, including the Ivory Coast and Iceland for the first time.

The week's opening ceremony, preceded by the traditional procession of UNT's international students dressed in costumes of their nations and carrying their nations' flags, begins at noon April 4 at the Shrader Pavilion.

A Sakura Festival — a Japanese cherry blossom festival including traditional Japanese music, dance and food — begins at 2 p.m. April 5 on the east side of the General Academic Building. During the event, a small grove of cherry trees that were recently planted on the east side of the building will be dedicated.

The trees were given to UNT by the National Collegiate Network Foundation, a Japanese education agency, in honor of the longstanding relationship and friendship between UNT and the agency.

International Week ends April 9 with another new event — Basant Panchami, an ancient festival of spring that originated in Pakistan and is now also celebrated in India. During the festival at the Physical Education Field, students will demonstrate kite flying techniques using fighter kites made in Pakistan and India. The festival will also include food booths, board games, music and a cricket match.

For more information on the events, call the International Welcome Center at (940) 369-8625.
