Texas Center for Music and Medicine

The Texas Center for Music and Medicine was born during the 1996 Music and Medicine Conference at the UNT College of Music. As a joint effort between the college and the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth, the center provides a unique opportunity for collaboration among musicians, physicians, researchers, psychologists, educators and biomedical engineers.

Bernard Rubin, chief of rheumatology and professor of medicine at the Health Science Center, and Kris Chesky, research assistant professor in the UNT College of Music, head the center.

Current research projects include a national epidemiological study of musicians' health; studies of mental health issues, including performance anxiety; the quantification of biomechanical risk factors related to wind instrument performance; and studies related to hearing loss in working musicians. Core graduate courses in music and medicine are being developed and will be offered this fall through the UNT College of Music.

At the Performing Arts Medicine Clinic in Fort Worth, part of the Texas Center for Music and Medicine, artists can take advantage of services such as comprehensive physical exams, care for acute and chronic injuries and illnesses, diagnostic laboratory services, injury prevention and education. They also have access to Health Science Center specialists and clinical services. At the Speech and Hearing Center on the UNT campus in Denton, musicians can benefit from services such as hearing testing, evaluation of noise exposure levels, voice therapy and examination of vocal chords.
