University Day started off with a bang April 5 when the Talons spirit group fires Boomer the victory cannon at 11:30 a.m. outside of Willis Library, kicking off the day's celebration. A replica of the bell originally used to sound curfew also will be rung.

UNT VP for administrative affairs to retire

After 22 years at UNT, Frederick "Fred" R. Pole, UNT vice president for administrative affairs and UNT System vice chancellor for administration, has announced plans to retire effective Aug. 31.

UNT study says gaps in baseball players' salaries may lead to losing seasons

The Texas Rangers are paying a record $252 million over 10 years for shortstop Alex Rodriguez, one of Major League Baseball's leaders in home runs, hits and runs batted in.

But the fact that Rodriguez's paycheck is much larger than those of the rest of the Rangers players may result in future losing seasons, according to two UNT economists.

Summer National Youth Sports Program at UNT

For the fifth straight year, Denton County preteens and teens will visit UNT this summer to participate in UNT's free National Youth Sports Program. The program, scheduled June 1 to July 5, combines basic instruction in organized sports with classes on alcohol and drug abuse prevention, math and science, higher education, nutrition and other topics.

UNT entrepreneurship student wins prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Wayne Rickard, a senior entrepreneurship and strategic management major at UNT, is one of 64 students in the United States to receive a Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which is among the premier national scholarships funded by Congress.
