DEBRAH BECK, health professions coordinator, was elected to a two-year term on the executive committee at the annual meeting of the Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, Feb. 6 in Dallas. TERRY CLOWER, assistant professor of applied economics and associate director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, presented "Local Economic Development in the U.S.: Practices and Lessons," chaired and was a discussant in the session "Developing Locally: Economic Development Lessons From Four Countries" and served on the panel "The Changing Nature of the Firm" at the annual meeting of the Western Regional Science Association, Feb. 25-28 in Maui, Hawaii. JARED HAZLETON, professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law and dean of the College of Business Administration, served as a discussant in two sessions, "Modeling Regional Structure and Change" and "Patterns and Trends in Regional Development Around the World," at the annual meeting of the Western Regional Science Association, Feb. 25-28 in Maui, Hawaii. THOMAS HOEMEKE, executive director of international studies and programs, received the Charles A. Klasek Award, given for long-term and outstanding service to the field of international education administration, at the annual conference of the Association of International Education Administrators in February in Washington, D.C. A founding member of the organization, Hoemeke was recognized for 37 years of service. JIM JOHNSON, Professor Emeritus of visual arts, received the Community Arts Recognition Award, given by the Greater Denton Arts Council to individuals who advance the arts through their work or activities, Feb. 27 in Denton. BERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, served as a discussant in two sessions, "Developing Locally: Economic Development Lessons From Four Countries" and "Modeling Regional Structure and Change," at the annual meeting of the Western Regional Science Association, Feb. 25-28 in Maui, Hawaii. RICHARD WELLS, professor of journalism, and MITCHELL LAND, associate professor of journalism and director of the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, won first place in the Best of Texas competition of the Texas Public Relations Association, Feb. 28 in San Antonio. Their book, Tales of a Tall Tower: KCEN-TV 1953-2003, 50 Years and Beyond, won in the Special Purpose Publication category.

GUTTERY, associate professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law, was the focus of a FOX-Channel 4 report at 5:30 a.m. March 8. He studied a Texas road targeted by the state for an extension that property owners fear will devalue their land. JOHNNY SUE REYNOLDS, professor and associate dean of the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, discusses the trend of "comfort" foods and familiar restaurant chains in area hospital food courts in the Feb. 27 Dallas Business Journal. JOHN RICHARD TODD, associate professor of political science and interim associate vice president for institutional research and accreditation, comments on the low voter turnout for recent Denton County election primaries in the March 14 Dallas Morning News. Local PRISCILLA CONNORS, assistant professor of merchandising and hospitality management, is quoted in an article about the fortifying of school lunch food with fish oil to make it healthier in the March 8 Denton Record-Chronicle. PHILLIP C. DIEBEL, UNT System vice chancellor for finance and UNT vice president for finance and business affairs , and DEBORAH LELIAERT, associate vice chancellor for communications and marketing and vice president for university relations, discuss planned tuition increases in the March 2 Denton Record-Chronicle.
ROBERT MAUGHN, lecturer of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, coached the Texas All-Stars, a team of outstanding Texas high school wrestlers, in the 30th Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic on March 13 at the University of Pittsburgh. PERRY McNEILL, professor of engineering technology, was interviewed by WFAA-TV Channel 8 at 5 p.m. March 15 for a story about new rules for gas drilling within Denton's floodplains near homes, parks and creeks. The Denton City Council member said that inspectors will enforce tough restrictions on the drilling.
