Check UNT's policy before accepting a second job

Summer is near and, for some, so is the prospect of adding a summer job. According to UNT policy, faculty and staff can take on part-time positions and freelance work in addition to their UNT positions; however, these jobs must be approved by a department supervisor and meet the following set of university guidelines.

  • The job can't interfere with an employee's primary UNT job.
  • An employee's UNT position can't give him or her an unfair advantage over legitimate private enterprises.
  • The job can't conflict with the interests of the state or the university.
  • An employee can't use his or her university position in conjunction with other employment (for example, using his or her title to endorse a product).
  • The job can't break any laws or constitutional provisions.

You can ask any questions about specific situations by speaking to a member of the human resources staff at (940) 565-2281 or in Marquis Hall, Room 150. These guidelines are outlined in more detail in the UNT Policy Manual, No. 1.2.2. If your summer job meets the policy requirements, you must complete the one-page "Request for Approval of Outside Employment" form and return it to your supervisor. The form can be downloaded at www.unt.edu/hr/forms/index.htm or picked up from human resources.

Nelda Evarts, interim director of human resources, also suggests that supervisors who are uncertain about whether a part-time position represents a conflict of interest should consult either human resources or the Office of the General Counsel at (940) 565-2717.
