Honoring UNT’s best and brightest — Mickey Burnim, one of North Texas’ earliest African American student leaders and 1972 graduate, addressed attendees of the Honors Day ceremony April 16. Burnim, who is chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, spoke to honorees about defining success in their lives.

DORIS RHEA COY, associate professor of counseling, development and higher education, spoke on self-injurious behavior at the West Texas Counseling Association meeting at Texas Tech, March 24 in Lubbock. She also was one of 120 participants invited by Suzanne Mubarak, the first lady of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Mary Jean Eisenhower, CEO of People to People International, to take part in Global Peace Initiative-Egypt 2003, Dec. 8-19 in Cairo.

JOHN HIPPLE, counseling psychologist in counseling and testing services, served on a panel discussing the emotional stresses facing musicians at the South by Southwest International Music Conference, March 19 in Austin; presented workshops on assessment and intervention with suicidal adolescents and the problems university freshmen experience at the Texas Education Agency High School Counseling Conference, March 21-22 in Austin; and presented a crisis intervention workshop at Tarrant County Community College-Southeast Campus, March 26 in Arlington.

FRANCES A. MAY, coordinator of user education and outreach in the libraries, GAYLA BYERLY, reference librarian, and BETH THOMSETT-SCOTT, science reference librarian, co-presented two pre-conference workshops, "Usability Testing-Part I: An Introduction" and "Part II: Hands On Application," at the Texas Library Association annual conference, March 17 in San Antonio. May also presented "Innovations in Reference: Integrating Library Services and Instruction Into Online Distance Education Classes" at the conference.

JAMES R. MORROW, Regents Professor of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, was chosen to deliver the McCloy Research Lecture, "Are American Children and Youth Fit? It’s Time We Learned," at the 2004 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance conference, April 1 in New Orleans. McCloy lecturers are recognized for outstanding research, national reputation, and record of scholarly publications and presentations.

ROBIE J. ROBINSON, assistant professor of public administration and emergency administration and planning, received his Certified Emergency Management status from the International Association of Emergency Managers on April 7. The designation requires professional achievements over an extended period of time as well as an essay, a written exam and endorsement from peers in the field.

LAURA SHORT, special projects writer for University Relations, Communications and Marketing, was a panelist in two "best practices" sessions on the topics of alumni relations and marketing at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District IV conference, April 5-6 in Houston. She presented the North Texas Insider e-mail newsletter as an example of alumni relations and the capital campaign update in The North Texan (2001-02) as an example of marketing capital campaigns.

RICK VILLARREAL, director of athletics, received the 46th annual Otis L. Fowler Award, which recognizes an individual for professional commitments that benefit the community, at the Denton Chamber of Commerce banquet, March 25 in Denton.

BERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, appeared on WFAA-TV Channel 8 at 6 p.m. March 29. He commented on the economic benefits of a new Dallas Cowboys football stadium.

RODDY WOLPER, director of news and information and associate director of University Relations, Communications and Marketing, and PHIL DIEBEL, UNT System vice chancellor for finance and UNT vice president for finance and business affairs, talk about the necessity of tuition increases in the March 27 Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

SUSAN ZAVOINA, associate professor and chair of the Department of Journalism, appeared on WFAA-TV Channel 8 news at 10 p.m. April 1. She shared her opinion that photographs can become symbols for turning points in history.

PAUL HUDAK, professor of geography, comments on a proposed saltwater disposal well in northwest Denton County in the April 4 Denton Record-Chronicle.
