Board of Regents authorizes $31.5 million to finance residence hall

In a March 7 teleconference meeting, the UNT Board of Regents approved a supplemental resolution authorizing up to $31.5 million in revenue financing bonds to finance constructing and equipping a new 600-bed residence hall and a dining hall on the Eagle Point Golf Course property. Construction is slated to begin in June.

At the meeting the regents also selected Turner Construction as the construction manager at risk for building an athletic center on the golf course property. A construction manager at risk is the contractor selected as the best qualified to provide pre-construction services during a project's design phase who then guarantees a maximum price for construction work on the project.

On Dec. 9, the board approved the design of the athletic facility and selected F&S Partners Inc. as the architect and engineering firm to design the project. According to Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, the complexity of the athletic center project indicated the need to select a construction manager at risk to help minimize costs. The actual construction of the athletic center will not begin until the university secures gifts and donations to cover construction costs.

In other action, the regents tabled the selection of a construction manager at risk for the residence hall until the proposal can be referred to the facilities committee in mid- to late April.

Following the meeting of the full board, the regents executive committee approved the architectural firm of Carter and Burgess of Fort Worth as the architect for the new residence hall.
