Several staff members were recognized at the President's Staff Sack Lunch March 5. Outstanding
staff awards were presented to Brian Bethea, Athletics; Cheryl Martin,
College of Business Administration; and Timothy Parks, Facilities Planning. Four staff members received Top Ideas for Productivity and Savings (TIP$) awards. Amy Evans, College of Business Administration, was honored for her suggestion to provide a training program for producers of the various newsletters and communication outlets on campus. Connie Havis, Custodial Services, was honored for her suggestion to add speed bumps at the entrance and exit of the UNT facilities yard adjacent to West Hall. Duane McFeely, Dining Services, was honored for his suggestion to provide forearm guards for the cooking staff in Dining Services to prevent burns caused by reaching across hot stoves. Rick Merrill, Facilities Services, was honored for his suggestion to replace the aging stamp machine in the University Union post office. Soaring Eagles, nominated by their peers for outstanding customer service, were also recognized. UNT President Norval Pohl spoke about the state of the UNT budget and the forecast for the 2004-05 biennium before he addressed questions submitted by staff members on various topics. Questions concerned a rumored legislative limit to the number of international students admitted to each college in the university; the idea of decreasing days of operation from five days a week to four days a week during the summer months; renovation plans for the UNT Research Park; faculty and staff use of the Student Recreation Center; and ways to honor UNT's first African American students.
