An article by CARRIE AUSBROOKS, assistant professor of teacher education and administration, was published in ERS Spectrum: Journal of School Research and Information, vol. 1, no. 20, winter 2002. The article is titled "Texas Open-Enrollment Charter Schools: Implications for Policy Development." She presented "Who Chooses Charter Schools? A Closer Look at Texas Open-Enrollment Charter School Students and Their Parents," and chaired a session at the Southwest Educational Research Association conference, Feb. 14-16 in Austin. She made two presentations, "Charter Schools and Equal Access" and "Texas Open-Enrollment Charter Schools: What Are They Like, How Are They Doing?" at UNT's Educational Research Exchange, Feb. 1 in Denton. "Eve of Thanksgiving." GAIL LIPPINCOTT, assistant professor of English, was organizer and chair of the session "Web Spinning: A Rhetorical Approach" at the Rhetoric in a Changing World conference, Feb. 8 in Denton. DIANA MASON, associate professor of chemistry, was named the secondary school editor of the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Education's Journal of Chemical Education in January. E. DALE ODOM, Professor Emeritus of history, served as chair at the session "Innovations in Texas Agriculture" at the Texas State Historical Association annual meeting, March 7-9 in Corpus Christi. Odom and his wife, Laverne, are the authors of An Illustrated History of Denton County, Texas, From Peters Colony to Metroplex. A short story by BARBARA RODMAN, associate professor of English, was published in Colorado Review, spring 2002. The story is titled "Bumblebee." JOHN "HAJ" ROSS, professor of English, presented "Siamese Sentences: A First Look at the Grammar of Multinodal Constructions" at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, International Linguistics Center, Feb. 12 in Duncanville. An article by PETER SHILLINGSBURG, professor of English, was printed in Perspectives of Scholarly Editing, Weidler Buchuerlag, 2002. The article, "The Subject of Our Mirth: The Aesthetic Object in Anglo-American Editing" is a revised version of a paper he presented at the Conference on Anglo-American and European Scholarly Editing, Dec. 8, 2000, in The Hague, Netherlands. Shillingsburg presented "Authority in Anglo-American Scholarly Editing" at the Conference on German Scholarly Editing, Feb. 21 in Aachen, Germany. EUGENE P. WRIGHT, professor of English, spoke on "Shakespeare's The Tempest and Post-Colonial Commentary" at the Fort Worth Shakespeare Club, Jan. 23 in Fort Worth, and "Shakespeare's Ideas and Language in the New Millennium" at the Addison Rotary Club Luncheon, Jan. 31 in Addison. He talked about the importance of education with students at W.H. Adamson High School, March 8 in Dallas.
State TED FARRIS, assistant professor of marketing and logistics, discusses changes in the economy indicated by the D-FW Purchasing Managers Index in the March 7 Fort Worth Star-Telegram. MADHAV PAPPU, assistant professor of marketing and logistics, discusses the trend toward creative integration of existing technologies in the March 4 Dallas-Fort Worth TechBiz. He says an area of interest for the UNT Center for Logistics Education and Research is tracking and tracing inventory within a facility and across the supply chain. PHIL TURNER, associate vice president for academic affairs for distance education and dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences, discusses the Hazel Harvey Peace Endowed Professorship in Children's Library Science in the Feb. 22 Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The professorship will enable the school to recruit and retain an outstanding faculty member in the area of children's library services. BERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, comments on the loss of area jobs as reported by the Texas Workforce Commission and its impact on the regional economy in the March 12 Dallas Morning News. In a separate article appearing in the March 12 Investor's Business Daily, Weinstein gives his opinions about the possibility of discontinuing government support of renewable resources.
