UNT's University Day April 5

University Day started off with a bang April 5when the Talons spirit group fires Boomer the victory cannon at 11:30 a.m. outside of Willis Library, kicking off the day's celebration. A replica of the bell originally used to sound curfew also will be rung.

UNT President Norval Pohl and Denton Mayor Euline Brock will make opening remarks and read a proclamation. Throughout the afternoon, various UNT organizations will sponsor tables with carnival games including a dunking booth live entertainment and lunch for $2.50.

This year marks the first time in recent years that University Day is being recognized on a day separate from Alumni Appreciation Day and Honors Day, which will both take place April 12. A luncheon introducing 48 outstanding alumni will be held at noon in the Silver Eagle Suite in the University Union. A reception and dinner at 6:30 in the Ballroom at the Gateway Center on North Texas Boulevard will honor an additional 21 alumni.

The Honors Day ceremony begins at 3 p.m. at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Judith Carrier, an educator, administrator and community leader, is the featured speaker this year. She is also the recipient of the UNT Outstanding Service Award and Distinguished Alumna Award. Carrier received both her master's and doctoral degrees at UNT and is the founding and current president of Tarrant County College Southeast Campus.
