UNT's student College Bowl team will challenge teams of faculty and staff members during the first College Bowl Challenge April 15. The event, open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the University Union Lyceum. Tickets are free to UNT students and are $2 for everyone else. Tickets can be purchased at the University Honors Program office, Room 309 in the General Academic Building. Tickets will also be sold at the door. All proceeds will buy buzzers and training materials for UNT's College Bowl team. Gloria Cox, director of the University Honors Program and coach of UNT's student College Bowl team, says faculty and staff members can participate in the College Bowl Challenge by forming four-member teams, or by signing up as individuals to be placed on teams. To participate, contact Cox at 565-3305 or gcox@unt.edu. The UNT College Bowl team will play all of the faculty/staff teams. College Bowl, a trivia game, began in the 1950s and is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Two teams of three to four students compete against each other, answering questions about literature and popular culture, sports, music and art, history and geography, science and mathematics and current events. No more than one graduate student may be on any team. During two seven- to eight-minute rounds, the students answer Toss-Up questions worth 10 points each, and Bonus questions worth 20 to 30 points each. A team must correctly answer a Toss-Up to be given a chance at a Bonus question. Since 1977, the Association of College Unions International and the College Bowl organization have organized official College Bowl campus, regional and national competitions. Teams qualify for one of 15 regional competitions by winning the College Bowl tournaments on their own campuses. The regional competitions, held in February, consist of teams from universities in two or more states and parts of Canada. UNT competes in Region 12, which includes universities in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Winners of the 15 regional tournaments and a wild card team selected from a random draw of the second-place regional tournament teams advance to the College Bowl National Championship Tournament in April. UNT sent a team to the College Bowl Region 12 competition this year for the first time in more than 10 years. Brandon Daniels, president of UNT's Student Government Association, decided to bring College Bowl to UNT after he played High School Bowl, the high school version of the game. The team currently includes Zubaer Mahboob, a second-year master's student in economics from Bangladesh; Dan Thompson, a senior radio, television and film major from Boerne; Daniel Kidd, a senior history major from Denton; Bach Bui, a second-year Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student from Houston; and Ryan Davidson, a first-year TAMS student from Del Rio. The team placed third in its division in the Region 12 tournament, compiling a 6-3 record. Other featured articles in this issue
