Campaign North Texas making a difference

At the Campaign North Texas: An Act of Leadership gala March 10, a crowd of 375 UNT supporters cheered as National Campaign Chair Bill Hunt unveiled the
university's progress toward a $150 million goal. Hunt announced UNT's success in raising $95.5 million, or almost 65 percent of the total goal, during the
campaign's quiet phase.

During the evening, faculty, students and alumni gave personal accounts of how money raised can make a difference.

"Our students are bright and hard working," said Ken Dickson, Regents Professor of biological sciences. "Many of them are holding down two or three part-time
jobs to go to school. Scholarships allowing these students to focus on their studies would liberate many a deserving person."

Sarah Broom, a journalism student who earned the UNT Excel Scholarship, which gave her in-state tuition status to attend UNT, told how the scholarship
provided her with educational opportunities.

"One scholarship opened more doors than I ever imagined," she said"The financial support was the propeller; the university, its uniqueness and faculty, a strong
wind that blew me off the shore."

Broom is also a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and Gates Millennium Scholar.

Alumna Peggy Ladenberger, counseling psychologist, spoke about the enjoyment of making a gift to promote higher education.

"To endow a scholarship, to honor a teacher or mentor, to further your interest in a particular field of study with a gift or gift-in-kind – there just can't be many
things more gratifying or more rewarding," she said.

During the next three years, the campaign will raise at least another $54.5 million to fund four overarching initiatives: scholarships and fellowships; faculty
chairs and professorships; program excellence; and 21st-century learning, research and student centers.

"All of these opportunities associated with the capital campaign will greatly assist our goal of being a flagship institution," said Dickson.
