University Center for Economic Development and Research The University Center for Economic Development and Research was created in 1989 to provide a unique link between the university and decision-makers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Since its inception, the center has conducted a wide range of policy-oriented research and provided technical assistance to dozens of local governments, chambers of commerce, private developers, and legislative and regulatory bodies. Projects undertaken by the center in recent years have included an indigent healthcare needs assessment for the city of Irving, a feasibility and economic impact study for the new Robson Ranch retirement community in Denton, an evaluation of the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific merger for the Texas Railroad Commission and an appraisal of the Metroplex business climate for the North Texas Commission. In addition to conducting grant and contract research, the center also publishes a semi-annual economic forecast called Perspectives. The center is recognized as a leading source of information and analysis on the Texas and Metroplex economies and is frequently cited by local and national media. Bernard L. Weinstein is the founding director of the center and Terry L. Clower serves as associate director. Both hold faculty appointments in the Institute of Applied Economics, a graduate program whose students have the opportunity to participate in the research performed by the center.
