Denton groups support engineering programs

Both the Denton City Council and the Denton Chamber of Commerce recently passed resolutions supporting proposed UNT engineering educational and research programs. The resolutions help bring UNT closer to its goal of implementing these programs.

The university recently received planning authority from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for baccalaureate- and master's-level engineering programs. Perry McNeill, professor of engineering technology, says the support from the Denton business and government organizations helps reinforce the idea that a need for these programs exists in the North Texas region.

The growth rate for jobs in the science and engineering professions is projected to increase by 45 percent between 1998 and 2008 in the north central Texas area, translating into the need for an additional 6,650 college-level graduates.

Because of this projected need, the Denton City Council and Denton Chamber of Commerce resolved to formally support UNT's goal to create these engineering programs.
