Campaign North Texas making a difference At the Campaign North Texas: An Act of Leadership gala March 10, a crowd of 375 UNT supporters cheered as National Campaign Chair Bill Hunt unveiled the university's progress toward a $150 million goal. Hunt announced UNT's success in raising $95.5 million, or almost 65 percent of the total goal, during the campaign's quiet phase. Payroll deductions available for capital campaign contributions Faculty and staff members who wish to contribute to Campaign North Texas: An Act of Leadership may choose to deduct a gift from their university paycheck over a period of time. All contributions are tax-deductible.
UNT, Addison
form partnership to create first North Texas Jazz Festival When the
town of Addison decided to create an annual jazz festival, it knew one
thing it wanted
the UNT jazz studies program to guide its artistic decisions. The first
North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison is under way now and continues through
Sunday April 8 with a lineup of major guest artists as well as UNT faculty
and student performers.
Inauguration plans nearing completion Details are being finalized for activities surrounding the inauguration of UNT president Norval Pohl on Friday, May 4. The theme for the event is "Shaping Our Future," and Pohl will speak on the topic during the inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in the UNT Coliseum. A reception is scheduled to follow the ceremony at roughly 5 p.m. in the Coliseum concourse. All UNT faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend both events. University Day April 27 UNT celebrates
Honors Day, Alumni Appreciation Day and University Day on April 27. The
Honors Day ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in Winspear Hall at the Murchison
Performing Arts Center. A reception follows in the Murchison lobby.
In continuing
the tradition of promoting public awareness about the environment, UNT
will sponsor a number of community-wide activities commemorating Earth
Day between 1 and 7 p.m. April 20.
Search
on for new head basketball coach UNT began a nationwide search for a new head men's basketball coach immediately following the March 12 departure of Vic Trilli.
Denton groups support engineering programs Both the Denton City Council and the Denton Chamber of Commerce recently passed resolutions supporting proposed UNT engineering educational and research programs. The resolutions help bring UNT closer to its goal of implementing these programs.
Graduate Student Council offering scholarships The deadline to apply for one of four $1,000 scholarships available to all UNT graduate students is quickly approaching. Master's and doctoral students have until April 15 to complete scholarship applications.
TAMS student places ninth in Intel Science Talent Search Adam Horch,
a Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student, placed ninth out of
40 finalists in the 2001 Intel Science Talent Search. He received a $20,000
scholarship bringing
his total Intel scholarship award winnings to $26,000 .
UNT gives the gift of life With 1,252 people making donations, UNT had the second-highest number of college and university faculty, staff and students who donated blood last year through Carter Blood Care. Texas A&M University had the highest number of students, faculty and staff members 1,626 who made donations last year. UNT was also the second-place winner in 1999. The UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth had the highest percentage of participation among its students, faculty and staff members of any college or university in Texas that donated blood through the Carter Blood Care center.
Staff awards presented at sack lunch Several staff members were honored at the Staff Sack Lunch Feb. 28. Outstanding staff awards were presented to Maureen Clouse, Housing; Hank Dickenson, Athletics; Robert Lothringer, Academy for Research and Professional Development; and Cathy Wilkinson, School of Community Service.
Acclaimed poet to visit UNT April 13 Bin Ramke,
a poet critically acclaimed for his remarkable precision, charm, pathos
and flexibility of voice, will read selections from his works at UNT April
13.
Inhouse@UNT awarded for improvements District
IV of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education recently honored
InHouse@UNT by awarding the publication a Circle of Excellence
award for most improved periodical.
Ideas sought from UNT to rename Avenue D/E The UNT Traditions Committee is seeking ideas from members of the UNT community for a suitable new name for Avenue D/E, which enters the southern portion of campus from Interstate 35, then borders the campus on the far west side. Lindsay Keffer, associate director of the University Union and UNT Traditions Committee chair, says the committee is searching for a street name that reflects the unique culture and image of the university. All name suggestions will be considered by Fred Pole, vice president for administrative affairs. Information about when the street might be renamed is not yet available, Keffer says. Ideas may be mailed to the UNT Traditions Committee, P.O. Box 310710, Denton, Texas, 76203-0710, or sent through campus mail in care of Keffer at the University Union.
Faculty Senate April meeting set The Faculty Senate will hold its regular monthly meeting at 2 p.m. April 11 in Wooten Hall, Room 322. Meetings are open to all members of the university community.
