Tailgating comes to UNT

The Texas tailgating tradition will park itself at Fouts Field this fall before each Mean Green home game.

The first chance to participate in this new campus activity is Aug. 18 during the UNT Tailgating 101 class sponsored by the athletics department before a green-and-white scrimmage. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Fouts Field. Tailgaters are encouraged to arrive around 5 p.m.

The basics of tailgating are simple bring your food, bring your friends and stake out a place around the stadium to build your Eagle spirit. There are only a few rules to follow:

  • For individuals of legal drinking age 21 years or older alcohol consumption is allowed while tailgating before the game in designated locations on campus. Individuals must provide their own alcoholic beverages. No alcoholic beverages are permitted outside the designated areas.
  • Tailgating may take place in any outdoor area on campus, except public streets. However, alcohol consumption is limited to the following designated areas: Fouts Field parking lot; designated areas adjacent to the football practice field; Physical Education Building intramural field; designated areas immediately adjacent to the Gateway Center.
  • All beverages must be consumed from plastic bottles, aluminum cans or paper or plastic cups. Glass bottles are prohibited for safety reasons.
  • Setup can begin as early as 8 a.m. No tailgating is allowed during or after the game.

The Mean Green starts the season Sept. 1 against TCU. The party begins before the kickoff, which is at 7:05 p.m., so plan to join Scrappy and hundreds of other Mean Green fans for food and fun both in and out of the stadium.
