Ferring named chair of geography department

Reid Ferring, a professor of geography, will assume leadership of the Department of Geography in August, replacing longtime chair Andrew Schoolmaster, who is retiring.

"We've done a lot of things, and we've got a lot we can do," Ferring says. "Our challenge isPhoto of Reid Ferring to see if we can keep growing and improving."

Ferring, who teaches geology, archaeology and physical geography, began working at UNT in 1978 as a research scientist in the Institute of Applied Sciences. He advanced to assistant professor and then professor.

He began his college studies at Southern Methodist University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and a doctoral degree in anthropology. He earned his second doctorate, which is in geology, at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Ferring's research made worldwide headlines this May when he and an international team of scientists uncovered two fossils in the Republic of Georgia a skull and skullcap that indicate early humans migrated out of Africa much earlier than previously believed. He was a lead author in the research article published in the journal Science in May.
