Housing department wins national diversity award

The UNT Department of Housing and Residence Life received the National Commitment to Diversity Award at the recent National Association of College and University Residence Halls national conference.

More than 200 universities across the nation submitted bids to the association that focused on commitment to diversity. The three finalists were UNT, Florida State and San Francisco State. UNT's bid highlighted diversity statistics as well as university and housing department statements on mission and diversity.

The UNT bid also focused on five programs held during the year: Native American Month, the Equity and Diversity Conference, Dialogue for Discussion, the Galleria Mall trip with international students and Disability Awareness Week.

According to Brandon Daniels, executive officer in UNT's Residence Hall Association, the award represents the commitment that UNT and the housing department have made to meeting the need for diverse programming on campus.

Last year, students of diverse ethnic backgrounds represented almost 28 percent of UNT's student population. About 26,500 students attend UNT.
