'Howdy Week' provides fun for students, faculty, staff Since 1982, the fall semester has been kicked off with Howdy Week, a weeklong series of activities that help students become familiar with the university as classes begin. This year's Howdy Week begins Aug. 27 with Student Convocation and runs through Aug. 31 with UNT's season-opening football game against Baylor. "We encourage faculty and campus departments to participate in all events," says Ona Tolliver, student services coordinator. "We want everyone to know that this is a universitywide function." Howdy Week has combined informational programs like the Eagle Information Tent, which gives students general information about the university, with entertainment activities like the Dive In Movie at the Physical Education Building swimming pool. Although Howdy Week still continues traditions like Convocation and departmental tours, this year's week also offers something a little different the Mean Green Fling. This carnival-like party is scheduled to begin after Convocation and will feature food, live bands, games, prizes and local merchants. Tolliver says the Mean Green Fling will give students a way to relieve stress before the first day of class. "We really want to create a welcoming environment and give students a good start for the fall semester," Tolliver says. Anyone interested in participating in Howdy Week may contact Tolliver or Jimmy Renfro at 565-3807.
