UNT has seen its share of bulldozers, broken concrete and workers in hard hats over the past year. Construction on campus has caused entire departments to relocate and students to find alternate routes to class. But, most projects are almost finished, and faculty, staff and students will soon enjoy an improved campus.
Regents hear legislative appropriations requests The UNT Board of Regents convened for a telephone meeting Aug. 4 to hear Budget and Finance Committee updates on legislative appropriations requests and to act on one recommended item regarding the campus master plan. All current regents participated in the special meeting that was necessary because the first draft versions of the requests must be sent to legislative staff in Austin by Aug. 21 before the start of the next scheduled regents meeting Aug. 25.
Push is on to fill Fouts Field for game against Baylor
UNT officials hope to shatter the previous record of 22,750 fans at a home Mean Green football game set in 1990 against Southern Methodist University by filling all 30,000 seats. Carnegie Foundation gives UNT highest designation When the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching releases the final version of its Classification of Institutions of Higher Education 2000 edition in the fall, UNT will be in the top category: among institutions ranked as Doctoral/Research Universities Extensive.
'Howdy Week' provides fun for students, faculty, staff Since 1982, the fall semester has been kicked off with Howdy Week, a weeklong series of activities that help students become familiar with the university as classes begin. This year's Howdy Week begins Aug. 27 with Student Convocation and runs through Aug. 31 with UNT's season-opening football game against Baylor.
Vehicle inspections
have little impact, researcher finds The state of Texas' 10-year-old vehicle inspection and maintenance program has resulted in little decrease of ozone levels in most of the state's urban areas that violate air quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a UNT researcher.
Now students can choose academic theme floors Starting this fall, students can choose from five academic theme floors in UNT residence halls.
Students who dream of a career on Broadway will now be able to get a degree in musical theatre at UNT. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved the addition of three bachelor of fine arts degrees in the UNT Department of Dance and Theatre Arts, including a degree in musical theatre as well as B.F.A. degrees for the traditional disciplines of dance and theatre arts to prepare students for many different performing career paths. Planning office surveys current, former students During the spring semester, the UNT planning office conducted two surveys one of former students and one of current students to help planners and administrators assess and understand students' motives for leaving the university and their perceptions of UNT.
