Regents to consider 2004 budget

Even though the Legislature faced a $9.9 billion deficit, UNT is recommending a budget with a modest increase of 2 percent for its 2004 educational and general funds to the Board of Regents at its Aug. 21 quarterly meeting.

UNT names provost and vice president for academic affairs

UNT successfully concluded a nine-month, nationwide search recently by selecting Howard C. Johnson of Syracuse University as its new provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Johnson, who currently is executive vice provost for academic affairs at Syracuse, has served that university in a number of teaching, scholarly and administrative roles for 30 years.

UNT names Davison interim vice president for development


Brent E. Davison, assistant vice president for development for UNT, began serving as interim vice president for development Aug. 1.

Davison will serve as the university's chief fund raiser on an interim basis while UNT conducts a national search for a new vice president for development. He replaces David Shrader, who has led the operations of the Office of Development since Spring 2001. Shrader retired from full-time duties at the university July 31.

UNT's NAACP chapter earns national recognition

Competing with more than 100 college chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the 157-member chapter at UNT was honored with the Youth and College Division Outstanding College Chapter Award at the association's national convention July 11-17 in Miami.

UNT professor warns of potentially unhealthy eating environment in schools

Every day parents send their kids to school with lunch money, and many may never realize the hefty competition for that money.

"Most parents assume that lunch is a tray with fruit, vegetables, milk, breads and meat," says Priscilla Connors, registered dietitian and UNT assistant professor of merchandising and hospitality management. "But besides the school breakfast and lunch programs, there are vending machines and á la carte sales that can turn a school cafeteria into a mall food court."

Anti-smoking CD-ROM is cool to Texas middle schoolers

Some of the students serving detention in Austin's middle schools watch a cartoon image of a seventh-grader named Gabe. As Gabe smokes a cigarette, nicotine disguised as a villain attacks his body and brain.

The cartoon is one of many images included on "Unfiltered: Exposing the Truth Behind a Pack of Lies," a multimedia CD-ROM designed to prevent students in grades six through nine from starting smoking and to help students who have already started smoking to quit.

More pharmacy benefit changes, some already effective

According to Medco Health, the company that manages UNT employees' pharmacy benefits for HealthSelect of Texas, a combination of higher costs and lower state funding has prompted some cost-cutting measures for the prescription drug plan. Four major changes are affecting the prescription drug plan some are different from changes previously reported.
