Mean Green Village to return to practice field for Homecoming 2002

UNT's Homecoming 2002 may still be months away, but plans to make this year's event unforgettable are well under way.

Homecoming is Nov. 1 and 2, and all events surround UNT's Saturday game against the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Game time is 3:05 p.m. at Fouts Field. Reserved seating tickets are $15 and general admission tickets are $8. They can be purchased at the UNT athletics ticket office by calling 565-2527.

The theme for Homecoming 2002 is "A Blaze of Green Glory." Events include a traditional pre-game barbecue in the Mean Green Village and tailgating on Saturday. The village returns to the practice field adjacent to Fouts Field this year. Unlike previous years, tents will be limited to the pop-up style, which will not damage the surface of the practice field.

Pat Sloan, director of special events in the Office of Development, says a limited number of pop-up tents as well as tables and chairs are available for rent. Call 565-2900 to rent items or reserve a spot in the village. Sloan says the athletics department has requested that tents be limited to 10-by-10, 10-by-20, and 20-by-20 pop-ups. Athletics suggests that groups consider purchasing pop-up tents from local retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Lowe's. This would enable groups to reuse the tents year after year at no added expense.

For the first time, each school, department or organization that pitches a tent can offer food and drinks.

"The food cannot be sold, but you can ask for a donation," Sloan says.

Spring Creek Barbeque will again be providing the barbecue meal for $6.50 for adults and $5.50 for children younger than 13. Spring Creek donates all of its proceeds from the event to scholarships.

This year's Homecoming brochure will be mailed to more than 140,000 alumni and friends of the university.

"This is great publicity and exposure for UNT departments, schools, colleges and organizations," Sloan says. "In order to include a group's Homecoming event information in the brochure, we must receive it by Aug. 12. People can call with the information or send it by e-mail to sloan@unt.edu."
