PLANNING ASSUMPTIONS 2000-2015
May 1999
1. The University
- The University of North Texas (UNT) will experience a sizeable enrollment
increase (to at least 35,000) by the year 2015 that will lead to a significantly
more diverse student body.
- UNT could have a larger residential campus to help offset the growing congestion
on the roadways in the Metroplex.
- UNT will have an increased number of internal and external partnerships.
- UNT's land holdings and building space will increase.
- UNT will serve as the flagship institution of the UNT System
2. The Environment
- Significant population growth will continue in UNT's region.
- The diversity of the population in UNT's region will continue to increase.
- UNT's region will continue to be highly competitive, with intense competition
for students in all programs.
- National competition in distributed learning will continue to increase.
- The growth in businesses in Denton will allow more students to work close
to where they go to school.
- Greater transportation issues will mean that UNT will have to offer more
courses at off-campus sites.
3. Economics of Higher Education
- The costs of higher education will increasingly be borne by students or
their parents.
- More UNT students will fund their education through a combination of grants,
scholarships, loans, and work.
- Fiscal and performance accountability will increase for institutions of
higher education.
4. Educational and Cultural Leadership
- UNT will provide the educational, research and cultural leadership for its
region.
- UNT will attract more high quality students in selected nationally and internationally
recognized programs.
- The University will continue to develop new partnerships with the UNT Health
Science Center at Fort Worth.
5. Technology and Learning
- Technology enhancement will continue, especially as it relates to instructional
delivery.
- Technology will have an increasing impact on nearly all programs, disciplines,
and markets, changing the way UNT delivers instruction and operates.
- The University will face significant costs to continue to upgrade its technology
on a regular basis.
6. Structure of Higher Education
- Regulation and support of Texas higher education will increasingly focus
on university systems.
- The UNT system will expand.
- UNT programmatic offerings will expand to include additional professional
programs to meet the changing needs of the region.
7. Access to Public Higher Education
- More citizens will need to have more convenient access to higher education.
- More ethnic minority citizens will be shut out of Texas universities if
they are denied universities in their communities.
- The UNT System Center at Dallas will attract more students and grow substantially
in a few years.
