Defense bill approved by Congress includes $4.8 million for UNT

By approving the $417.5 billion Department of Defense appropriations bill for fiscal year 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate authorized $4.8 million in funding for the UNT Center for Advanced Research and Technology at the UNT Research Park. President George W. Bush is expected to sign the measure soon. Securing the funding for UNT were Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, co-author of the bill in the Senate, and Rep. Michael Burgess in the House of Representatives.

"This federal funding is without a doubt the most significant ever received by UNT," says President Norval Pohl. "It comes at a time when the university is rapidly expanding its College of Engineering and aggressively commercializing patents developed by faculty and graduate students. The $4.8 million earmark will fund a new laboratory for micro and nano electro mechanical systems."

Pohl says the lab's first focus will be on sensor devices that will play major roles in homeland security.
