For the sixth year, Texans are getting a sales tax break today through Sunday on purchases of most clothing and footwear. During the tax holiday, retailers should not collect sales taxes on most clothes and shoes that sell for less than $100. Tax is still due on sales of athletic and protective clothing and footwear not normally worn except for their intended use. For example, since basketball shoes are worn for many activities other than basketball, they can be sold tax-free during the tax holiday. On the other hand, spiked golf shoes are rarely worn except when playing golf and thus are not exempt from tax. Additionally, tax is still due on sales of accessories, backpacks, jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches and similar items. As you think of back-to-school shopping for your children's clothing, don't forget that the tax-free break includes apparel purchased at the UNT Book-store. Rodney Davison, store director, says many items are already marked down for summer clearance. Shoppers can piggyback the tax break on top of the markdowns and also take advantage of the bookstore's Friday Pride Day promotion. "UNT community members who come into the store on Fridays wearing a UNT green shirt will receive an additional 10 percent off their purchases," Davison says. The bookstore is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday.
