MEDICAL SERVICES FEE
PERTINENT FACTS
At its November 2000 meeting the Board authorized the University to propose legislation that would allow the Board to increase the Medical Services fee to $30 beginning with the fall 2001 semester. The Legislature passed the bill authorizing the increase.
The fee is currently at $25, but has been at that level since September 1, 1997. Because the $25 fee has not allowed the Health Center to keep up with rising costs, the Center has had to reduce services, most specifically its hours of operation. The Legislature recognized our need to raise the fee and approved an increase to $30 that must begin in the fall 2001 semester, with subsequent increases limited to no more than 10% unless approved by a student referendum. Therefore, to be consistent with the legislation, we are requesting the Board to authorize an increase in the fee to $30 beginning with the fall, 2001 semester. However, because we have already pre-registered many of our students for the fall semester prior to the timing of this increase, we are asking the Board to waive the increase for fall 2001. Thus, the increase will not be charged until the spring 2002 semester.
The fee would be $15 for the regular summer term, and prorated downward for shorter terms.
RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS
The President, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, recommends that the Board of Regents approve the increase in the Medical Services fee as described above.
