Senate discusses exam schedule, tenure, promotion

The Faculty Senate approved proposed changes to the Fall 2004 final examination schedule during the group's Nov. 10 meeting. The change came in response to the Mean Green football team's bid to play for the fourth year in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 14, during UNT's scheduled week of final exams. The new schedule moved exams originally scheduled for Dec. 13-15 to Dec. 8, 9 and today.

In other business the senate:

  • Discussed issues and concerns surrounding the 2003-04 promotion and tenure decisions and process.
  • Heard a report made by Frances Van Tassell, senate chair. She said six faculty members will be appointed to serve on the Responsibility Centered Management Committee.
  • Heard a report made by Grant Miles, senate vice chair, on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting with administrators. Issues discussed included assessment of distance learning, faculty involvement in the development of responsibility centered management, funding for research and non-research departments, the need for a definition for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's label of "emerging research" institution, and delays in reimbursement of vendors and faculty. Miles also called for continued input in the academic plan for the university, developed by the provost.
  • Approved a report from the Committee on Committees.
  • Approved a report from the Faculty Awards Committee.

The Faculty Senate met again Dec. 8. A report about that meeting is planned for publication in the Jan. 14 issue of InHouse.
