Mean Green to revisit New Orleans Bowl

Mark Packer, right, University Union programs coordinator, and Jim Nicklas, Union director, serve New Orleans-style bread pudding Dec. 3 to celebrate the bowl trip. The event benefited the Denton Community Food Center.

For the third time in three years, the Mean Green will visit the "Big Easy" as Sun Belt Conference champions during the New Orleans Bowl. The team will compete against the University of Memphis Tigers at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 in the Louisiana Superdome.

With the Mean Green are the coach and players who swept honors during the Sun Belt All-Conference voting. Darrell Dickey won coach of the year for the third year in a row, while Brandon Kennedy was named player of the year for the second consecutive year and Chris Hurd received defensive player of the year honors. Patrick Cobbs was named offensive player of the year and continues to be the nation's leading rusher in average yards per game.

Kennedy, Hurd and Cobbs were also selected to the Sun Belt All-Conference first team, along with seven other UNT players.

Fans unable to travel to New Orleans can catch the bowl game, which is being aired on ESPN2, at the Syndicate on the first floor of the University Union. The watching party starts at 5 p.m. Several Denton establishments will also show the game, including the Loophole on Denton's Courthouse Square and Riprocks on West Hickory Street. For information about tickets to the game or pre-game activities in New Orleans, call (940) 565-2527 or visit www.unt.edu/mgathletics/bowlgame/.
