The UNT System is collecting contact information from people interested in being informed about its pursuit of opening a public law school in Dallas.
In December, Chancellor Lee Jackson announced that the UNT System intends to seek approval from the Texas Legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to establish a new public law school in downtown Dallas. State Sen. Royce West and State Rep. Tony Goolsby plan to sponsor bills during this legislative session to provide authority. "If approved, several years of facility preparation, faculty hiring and curriculum planning lie ahead, so UNT might expect to enroll students in the fall of 2008 or 2009," Jackson says. Dallas-Fort Worth is the ninth-largest metropolitan region in the country and the largest without a public law school. While more than 1,700 new legal jobs are produced each year in North Texas, area employers must recruit many trained attorneys from other regions and states, Jackson says. To receive periodic updates about the law school, subscribe to the contact list online at untsystem.unt.edu/initiatives_lawschoolform.htm.
