Program designed to help reduce parent stress

Research has shown that 81 percent of parents polled report that they think parenthood is tougher now than in prior generations.

To help parents deal with the increased demands of parenting, the UNT Center for Play Therapy is offering free training for parents of children ages 2 to 10.

Parents will learn basic child-centered play therapy skills for meeting children's emotional needs, building children's self-esteem and helping children learn self-control. According to the center, hundreds of parents have reported that this training, called filial therapy, has changed their lives.

The small group training sessions begin the week of Feb. 19 and are one hour each week for 10 weeks. Parents who are interested in participating in the program should call 565-3864 to register and give their preference for a time either a noon brown-bag time or other option.

Training sessions will be held in the UNT Counseling and Human Development Center in Stovall Hall. UNT's play therapy program is internationally known and has the largest body of research in filial therapy anywhere.
