COMPUTING CENTER BUILDING

PERTINENT FACTS

The Board of Regents, at their regular meeting on February 11, 2000, approved the Information Science Building (ISB) addition and renovation and selected Aguirre Corporation as architect for the project.

The unexpected potential for purchase of the Flow Hospital facility and its use for the Computing Center caused us to delay the design effort on the ISB addition. It now appears questionable whether the University can consummate the purchase of Flow Hospital and a reevaluation of the ISB addition has shown that there are numerous benefits to constructing a stand-alone facility on the perimeter of the campus for the Computing Center. As the University grows, it is important to relocate the staff support functions to the perimeter and leave the core of the campus available for activities which have a high level of direct student access and academic purpose.

It is appropriate to reaffirm the selection of Aguirre Corporation as Architect now to assist in completion of the program statement and budget, and to begin design of the project. A project budget will be submitted for Board of Regents approval following preparation of the program and budget documents for the new building. The major renovation work in the ISB will be accomplished after the Computing Center has moved to the new building. An interim project to provide adequate handicapped accessibility in the ISB will be completed as soon as possible.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS

The President recommends, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, that the Board of Regents:

  1. Approve the concept of construction of a new facility for the Computing Center.
  2. Reaffirm Aguirre Corporation as architect for the project.
