An article by AL BAVON, associate professor of public administration, was published in the Journal of Health and Human Services Administration, fall 2001. The article is titled "Gaps Between HIV/AIDS Policies and Treatment in Correctional Facilities."

DANIELLE BRUNE, visiting assistant professor of English, reviewed an article titled "The Black Spiritual Movement Revisited" for H-Net Reviews, February 2003.

An article by PATRICIA CUKOR-AVILA, associate professor of English, was published in English in the Southern United States, Cambridge University Press, 2002. The article is titled "The Complex Grammatical History of African-American and White Vernaculars in the South."

An article by KELLY DONAHUE-WALLACE, assistant professor of visual arts, was published in the Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Esteticas, vol. 78. The article is titled "The Printmakers of Eighteenth-Century Mexico City."

MARY HARRIS, professor of teacher education and administration, presented the work of the North Texas Partnership on Parent Engagement at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education annual meeting, Jan. 25 in New Orleans. The work included pilot testing of modules prepared by the partnership for integrating parent involvement into the teacher education curriculum by LINDA ALLEN, lecturer in teacher education and administration, KATHLEEN MOHR and CAROL WICKSTROM, assistant professors of teacher education and administration, and KAREN WEILLER, associate professor of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation.

The work of MARIE C. JONES, lecturer in English, was published in a chapbook for Oil Hill Press, January 2003. The poem is titled "Love Song, With Mass Extinction."

An article by GAIL LIPPINCOTT, assistant professor of English, was published in the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, vol. 17, no. 1, 2003. The article is titled "Rhetorical Chemistry: Negotiating Gendered Audiences in Nineteenth-Century Nutrition Studies."

KATHRYN M. McCAULEY,
student legal advisor, was elected president of the southwest region of the University Student Legal Services Association at its annual conference, Jan. 5-8 in Las Vegas.

JOHN PETERS, assistant professor of English, acted as chair of the "Conrad and Philosophy" session at the Modern Language Association of America conference, Dec. 29 in New York City. He was elected vice president of the Joseph Conrad Society of America in 2002.

An article by KAREN WEILLER, associate professor of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, and SCOTT MARTIN, assistant professor of kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, was published in the Journal of Sport and Social Issues, vol. 27, February 2003. The article is titled "Gender Bias in the 1996 Olympic Games: A Comparative Analysis." Weiller was published in NASPE Academy Action Sport Sociology, February 2003. The article is titled "Where Are We One Year Later?"

The CBS-Channel 11 news broadcast live from North Texas with reactions to Colin Powell's address to the United Nations from the class of GLORIA COX, associate professor of political science and director of Academic Core Programs. The story aired live at noon and again at 5 p.m. Feb. 5.

BETTY CROCKER,
associate professor of teacher education and administration, discusses in the Feb. 10 Fort Worth Star-Telegram UNT education master's courses for teachers offered at Northwest High School in Justin. Classes take place at the high school as an alternative to commuting.

PETER LANE, visiting lecturer in history, comments on the impact of the Columbia space shuttle tragedy in the Feb. 7 Dallas Morning News.

President NORVAL POHL discusses plans to begin construction of a residence hall on the location of the former Eagle Point Golf Course as a result of the approval of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in the Jan. 31 Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Jan. 31 Denton Record-Chronicle. In an article appearing in the Jan. 31 Dallas Business Journal, Pohl comments on the possibility of opening a museum with Texas Woman's University, combining the two universities' fashion collections.

BERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, comments on the increase in office property values located near DART lines in the Jan. 28 Dallas Morning News.

Local

STEVE HARLOS, professor of music, is featured in a Jan. 30 Denton Record-Chronicle article. He and various music faculty celebrated his 50th birthday with a concert Feb. 4.

BONITA JACOBS, assistant professor of counseling, development and higher education and vice president for student development, discusses reasons for the increase in UNT enrollment in the Jan. 31 Denton Record-Chronicle.

President NORVAL POHL and DAVID KESTERSON, provost and vice president for academic affairs, discuss recent UNT achievements and research by faculty members in the Feb. 6 Denton Record-Chronicle. Pohl discusses the appointment of OSCAR GARCIA as the new dean for UNT's College of Engineering in the Feb. 8 Denton Record-Chronicle.

WALTON HENRY SHARP, 61, of Spring, assistant professor of applied economics at UNT from 1983 to 1990 and former director of the Labor and Industrial Relations Institute, died July 9 at his home. He received his bachelor's degree in business from Lamar University, his master's degree from the University of New Orleans and his doctorate from the University of Houston. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Industrial Relations Research Association and the Academy of Management. He taught at the University of Houston before joining UNT and later worked as a labor consultant for the U.S. Steel Workers. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Sharp of Hemphill; a brother, James Sharp of Burkeville; a sister, Sharon Walls of Houston; five nieces; and one nephew. Services were held July 13 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home with burial following at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Port Arthur.

JOE C. THOMAS, 84, of Denton, UNT maintenance employee from 1961 to 1972, died Feb. 10. He was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Denton. He retired as plant manager for 7-Up Bottling Co. and then worked at North Texas in air conditioner maintenance. Survivors include his son, Clinton Thomas of Aubrey, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services were held Feb. 12 at Schmitz-Floyd-Andersen Funeral Home in Denton with burial Feb. 13 at Roselawn Memorial Park.
