UNT kicks off Black History Month celebration

Twenty-one events including lectures, group discussions, seminars, films, leadership training, a comedy show, a gospel concert, a conference, a heritage dinner and a black history quiz are all planned as part of UNT's celebration of Black History Month.

The month of February is designated to celebrate the history, culture, life and achievements of Africans and African Americans.

Most of UNT's events are planned by the Student Ethnic Enrichment Center and various student organizations.

The celebration kicked off Feb. 1 with the third annual Seminar on Blacks in Higher Education. The seminar was followed by an evening lecture by nationally known social psychologist Julia Hare, executive director of the Black Think Tank in San Francisco.

The national theme for 2001, as set annually by the Association for African American Life and History, is "Creating and Defining the African American Community: Family, Church, Politics and Culture."

For a complete listing of Black History Month events, see the UNT Event Calendar web site at www.unt.edu/events.
