Rec center construction to start in March

Members of the UNT community will notice new construction in the western portion of campus beginning in March.

Construction is scheduled to start on the new Student Recreation Center in March, but first, Edwards and Chestnut halls must be razed to make room for the new facility.

Occupants of Edwards Hall were scheduled to move out Feb. 21 and asbestos abatement was to begin. In addition, the university has closed parking lots 13, 14, 15 and 16 surrounding Edwards and Chestnut.

On Feb. 25, a construction fence is scheduled to go up around the perimeter of the site, from Sycamore Street to Chestnut Street, permanently closing Edwards Street. Shortly after the fence is completed, demolition of Chestnut Hall will begin, and Edwards Hall will come down when abatement is complete, scheduled for Feb. 27. Julius Zsohar, director of construction for the UNT System, says preliminary construction work is scheduled to begin on the site March 1.
