Columnist to sign book copies at UNT Feb. 26 book

Former Dallas Morning News columnist Bob St. John, who spent 14 years as a sportswriter before moving to the Metro section, will sign copies of his latest book, Texas Sportswriters: The Wild and Wacky Years, at UNT Feb. 26.

The event is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. at the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, Room 207 of the General Academic Building.

In Texas Sportswriters, St. John, a UNT alumnus, describes his experience of writing about sports for the Morning News from 1964 to 1979. Beginning in 1967, he covered the Dallas Cowboys, including the team's victories in Super Bowl VI in 1972 and XII in 1978.

Described by Monday Night Football broadcaster Howard Cosell as a "sensitive and articulate" writer, St. John received more than 40 awards for sportswriting, including awards for best game story in 1973 and best column in 1974 from the Pro Football Writers Association of America.

St. John's other sports-related books include a trilogy about longtime Cowboys coach Tom Landry: Landry, published in 1979; The Landry Legend, published in 1989; and Landry: The Legend and the Legacy, published in 2000. He is also the author of Tex, a biography of longtime Cowboys owner Tex Schramm; and First Down, Lifetime to Go, co-written by Roger Staubach, Cowboys quarterback from 1969 to 1979.

In 1978, St. John became a feature columnist for the Morning News' Viewpoints page and Metro section. He retired in 2000. He is currently writing a book about the Greek island of Paros.

A 1960 graduate of UNT, St. John was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the university in 1986, the highest honor given to alumni. That same year, he was named to the UNT Department of Journalism's Cecil Shuford Journalism Hall of Fame.
