The Fouts Field track will be filled with walkers and joggers for 12 hours April 16 when the American Cancer Society holds its annual Relay for Life in Denton. During the event, teams gather to take turns walking or running laps, with at least one team member on the track at all times. Prior to the event, teams collect pledges to benefit the American Cancer Society. UNT offices and departments are encouraged to put together teams for the Denton Relay for Life, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, says Peggy Fogle, assistant director of the Student Health and Wellness Center at UNT and a past team recruitment chair of Relay for Life-Denton.
"UNT is well represented at the relay, often registering as many as 13 teams," she says. "We've had teams from human resources, student accounting, admissions and business services as well as the Student Health and Wellness Center." The relay begins at noon with an opening ceremony and ends at midnight. The fundraising goal for this year is $150,000. Since 1995, Relay for Life events in Denton have raised $800,000, says Ann Hodges, registration coordinator for this year's event. Hodges says teams should plan to register by March 14, while individuals may register after that time to be placed on an existing team. For registration information, contact Hodges at (940) 241-2049.
