UNT working to reduce fiscal year 2002-03 budget by $8 million

Almost all faculty and staff positions currently open at UNT will remain unfilled following a hiring freeze directive handed down by President Norval Pohl late last month.

The freeze comes as part of the university's plan to trim 7 percent of the current fiscal year's budget. Cutbacks were ordered by the state in late January to help combat a projected $1.8 billion deficit in the state budget.

A memorial for heroes — The UNT community came together at the Shrader Pavilion Feb. 5 to memorialize the seven astronauts who died Feb. 1 when the space shuttle Columbia broke apart over Texas, minutes before it was due to land in Florida. Michael Slaughter, UNT ROTC member, holds an American flag used in the service while Ken Ballom, dean of students, addresses those who gathered.  



Escalante named UNT System vice chancellor for administrative services

The UNT System has named Richard L. Escalante, city manager of Farmers Branch, to the post of system vice chancellor for administrative services.

Enrollment up 6.8 percent over last spring

As of the 12th class day for Spring 2003, unofficial enrollment at UNT is up 6.8 percent over last year. That's 29,373 students this spring compared to a 27,398 official enrollment last spring an addition of 1,975 students.

Book drive for Thailand community expanded to include books for adults

The people of Chiang Rai, Thailand, need books, any books from Grisham to Steinbeck to build an English community library.

Enterprise Information System project implementation under way

The Enterprise Information System project team moved into the UNT Research Park last month and has begun implementation of the software utilized by the new system that will integrate many of the separate administrative systems currently used by the university.
