Mean Green soars to grab bowl win

On Dec. 17, for the first time since 1946, the Mean Green was victorious in a bowl game, battling past the University of Cincinnati 24-19 and winning the second annual New Orleans Bowl.

The win not only earned UNT its first bowl victory in 56 years, but it also closed out a successful season in which the Mean Green finished with seven consecutive wins the first time that's happened since 1950.

UNT running back Kevin Galbreath took home the game's Most Valuable Player trophy after rushing 28 times for 130 yards and one touchdown.

Members of the UNT community rallied around the Mean Green Dec. 18, holding banners high and singing the UNT fight song as buses carrying the team, coaching staff and Athletics Department staff members arrived on campus with police escorts.

The city of Denton plans to recognize the Mean Green football team and Darrell Dickey, head football coach, at the Jan. 21 City Council meeting to proclaim the week of Jan. 20-26 as Mean Green Week.
