Leadership Texas preps three UNT faculty for prime roles

Changing the portrait of leadership one woman at a time remains the goal of the UNT Commission on the Status of Women. In keeping with that mission, the commission sponsors an annual UNT Leadership Texas scholarship competition.

Leadership Texas alumnae of UNT nominate one scholarship recipient, whose program participation is funded by the President's Office.

This year, Jacqueline Chanda, chair of the division of art education and art history in the School of Visual Arts, received the nomination and was subsequently chosen by an Austin-based Leadership Texas selection committee. In addition, Bonita Jacobs, vice president for student development, and Michelle Walker, assistant professor of technology and cognition, were accepted into the program.

"The Leadership Texas program extends development opportunities to women who are already at the forefront in their professional lives and communities. Participants come from diverse backgrounds and have a unique perspective, which ultimately benefits the entire class," Berry says.

This year about 100 women will attend five, three-day sessions in various cities throughout the state. The workshops will familiarize participants with state policies, introduce techniques in creative problem solving, help to reframe debates on social and economic issues and provide tools for participants to use in their professional lives.

Since its establishment in 1983, the Leadership Texas program has graduated more than 1,100 participants.
