Library Mall renovation work continues

The renovation of the Library Mall, located between Willis Library and the Eagle Student Services Center, has begun with the installation of 16 new light poles. The new lights, which provide brighter lighting for the mall, are the first in a series of renovations planned for the area.

Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, says that the campus community has expressed support for the upgrade of the Library Mall area for some time.

He says plans are also in place to restore the fountain, plant a substantial number of trees and create a new plaza that will contain the UNT logo. New water features, including a series of small fountains flowing through the mall area, are also planned.

The installation of the lights and removal of the tall lighting mast that stood in the fountain were completed by the end of the fall semester. This month new trees are being planted and some existing trees relocated. The fountain should be com-pleted and operational this spring, and the remainder of the work — the water features and logo — will be completed as funds are made available through gifts and other sources, Rafes says.

An artist's drawing of the Library Mall as it will appear after renovations are completed. The Hurley Administration Building appears at the top of the drawing, and Highland Street appears at the bottom. The fountain in front of the library, which has not been filled with water since 1980, is expected to be operational this semester.
